Peru: by the end of 2009 there will be more than 90,000 NGVs

The Peruvian Chamber of Natural Gas Vehicles (PCNGV) revealed encouraging data about the progress of methane’s business in the Andean country. Nowadays there are over 65,000 units powered by this cheap and environmentally friendly fuel, and it is expected that by the end of 2009 the amount will exceed 90,000 cars.

The rising curve does not stop there: they also expect that NGV refueling stations will be more in the short term. "I think, hopefully, that at the end of the year there will be over 90 of these facilities in Lima," said Jorge Suarez, general manager of the PCNGV. So far, the Peruvian capital and the city of Callao have 66 points of sale, while another 21 are under construction.

Besides, Suarez remembered that natural gas producer Pluspetrol and the national government agreed in 2006 to freeze the price of fuel by six years. "The main objective of this measure was to encourage the use of natural gas in the vehicle fleet, which has been achieved so far", he explained.

Moreover, the Ministry of Energy and Mines announced in recent days that the energy company Petrobras Peru would confirm natural gas reserves in Block 58 in September, located in the Cusco region and near the Camisea.

The organization believes that, with the power of that lot, Peru's reserves of natural gas -15.1 trillion cubic feet- will increase significantly. This way, the country demonstrates that it has become in a hotspot of NGV development.

Peru will be also the epicenter of two international and significant events. On the one hand, the I Latin American Summit of NGV and Alternative Fuels, which conclusions and targets will be embodied in the “Declaración Lima 2009”. On the other hand, it will take place the II ExpoGNV Peru, that will welcome 60 exhibitors and over 5,000 visitors from all over the world.
