Peru: two exclusive refueling stations will supply the public transport system in Lima
The company Peruana de Gas Natural (PGN) will build the north and south facilities for the Metropolitan corridor of the capital city, where 600 CNG-driven buses will operate.
PGN, which signed a contract with the Metropolitan Institute Protransporte of the Municipality of Lima, will supply more than 3 million cubic meters of compressed natural gas a month for the brand new public transport system, which is expected to mobilize about 700,000 people from 2010.
"Today, with the signing of this contract, we are showing the way, in public transport’s field in the region, towards an environmentally friendly system, becoming Lima the first city in Latin America to operate its metropolitan fleet with natural gas, an abundant energy resource which offers -at the same time- great economic and ecological benefits for everyone”, stated Edgardo Escobar, general manager of PGN.
The company reported that the Peruvian capital will be, therefore, in the ranking of the more important world cities that use natural gas for public transport. Beijing has the largest CNG-propelled buses around the planet, with 5,000 units, while Los Angeles owns 2,200. Seoul and Pusan in South Korea possess together 6,200 NGVs.
Peru will be the epicenter of the I Latin American Summit of NGV and Alternative Fuels, and the II ExpoGNV Peru, which will welcome 60 exhibitors and over 5,000 visitors from all over the world. For further information, visit www.expongnvperu.com.
